Stella and KC Host a Pittie Party

Stella and KC had themselves a pittie party this weekend, inviting a few of their closest pit bull friends over for a Memorial Day swim.

Most had attended doggie daycare – so we knew everyone was dog friendly – but just like with kids, the introductions were slightly awkward.  Once they met (sniffed each other’s butts), got over their shyness (ran away), and established ranks and set boundaries (growled), everyone relaxed and had fun.

KC only showed her true (mean girl) side once…when claiming her outside couch-throne.  A few minutes inside for a time out, though, and she got the message.

Tot, rescued by Stray Rescue with her brother Tater and adopted by my friend Nicole, brought her own pool to the party.

Cockapoo KC has no problem partying with the pitties.  Here she passes by Niki, who chooses not to follow the crowd.

Nicole rethinks her snack time idea. Actually, they were all very well-behaved 🙂 To her right (besides me laughing my head off) is Mia, a pugador (pug-labrador), whose dad Brad works with me at the Watering Bowl.

Stella, almost 11, made an appearance until nap time; then we never saw her again.

We had one minor mishap. Tot, whose legs are as short as a Basset Hound’s, took a flying leap from the 4-foot wall to the pool deck and landed on her chin. We don’t know how she didn’t break a leg or her jaw.

Our hope for the day was to hang out with friends and watch the pups run around and wear themselves out.

Based on the pictures sent to me later…

…I’d say the party was a success.

Pee On My Roses, Swim In My Pool

Summer is over
the pool soon closes
next year the pups
can again pee on my roses
The shelter provides housing
vet care and food
but a pool and sunshine
can change anyone’s mood!
Away from the chaos
away from the noise
a dive into the pool
to catch frisbees and toys
An hour or two
provides small bits of fun
shelter dogs know how to
show how it’s done
After some play time
back to the shelter they go
but not until kisses
they give so we know
how grateful they are
for the time that was had
and to remind us
to be hopeful and
 not to be sad
For one day a home
of their own will be found
with a plastic pool
or one in the ground
In their place in the shelter
a new dog will be
and in my pool they’ll swim
and in my roses they’ll pee
As volunteers we know
what a difference we make
in the lives of shelter dogs whose
sanity is at stake
All it takes is an hour
to give here and there
for a lifetime of love
of which we’ve got plenty to spare
When over the dogs
we do make a fuss
We’re not sure who gets more out of it…
them…
or us?

Thank you, KC, for sharing your pool and my husband for being understanding 🙂

Backyard Makeover/Renovation is Complete!

I don’t have a lot of “before” pictures, but the red brick wall went in an L-shape around the pool. Where the two lounge chairs are in the picture below shows the amount of deck space we had. None.
The black fence on the right in the picture is where our master bedroom addition is.
The black iron fence went around the brick wall and completely closed in the pool area and separated it from a big grassy area in the back yard.
Just taking down the black fence opened up the backyard a ton.  The red brick wall comes down…
The stone wall goes up…
Where the curved red brick wall was in the second picture from the top is now a waterfall…

We now have deck space!

Master bedroom/octagon reading room…

The new fence goes around the whole backyard behind the trees…

View from the kitchen…
Steps leading down to the driveway…

Driveway area…

Added some flowers and landscaping to the front too 🙂

Nighttime pics…
